DMI was established in 1987 in the backdrop of world’s worst ever Chemical Disaster as an autonomous organization of Housing and Environment Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh now under Administrative control of Home Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh . It is the only institute of its kind in the whole country attaining substantial credibility in imparting professional training and providing consultancy services in the area of natural as well as man-made disaster management.
